Children's Braces Service at Kha Dental
How much do children's braces cost, where to get them, and when is the best time are top concerns for many parents whose children have crooked, crowded, protruding or underbite teeth… making their child less confident in communication, with poor oral health, affecting the child's psychological and physical development. With a bank of successful pediatric orthodontic clinical cases, Kha Dental wants to share useful knowledge to help parents understand clearly, ease all worries and feel reassured as their child begins the braces journey to a healthy, pretty smile and a confident future.
The “Golden” Time for Children's Braces: What Parents Should Know
Children's braces are a dentofacial orthopedic method in which the doctor uses appliances and brackets together with archwires or clear aligner trays to move the child's teeth into the correct position on the dental arch and correct skeletal irregularities. This gives children more confidence with an even, beautiful smile, completes facial aesthetics, and supports chewing and oral hygiene.
The ideal age for children's orthodontics is 4–12 years (the tooth replacement stage). At this stage the jawbone and tooth replacement are developing strongly, and the jawbone is in a growing, “flexible,” easy-to-“shape” period, which makes it very favorable for widening, aligning and guiding the bone to the correct position while arranging the teeth evenly.
In particular, from the time a child is 4–6 years old, parents should take their child to a specialist in dentofacial orthopedics to assess jaw development, monitor the eruption of baby teeth and the replacement by permanent teeth, check the number of tooth buds, and detect any dental and bone abnormalities early.
If parents wait until the child is 14–15, by which time the permanent teeth have fully erupted and jaw growth is almost complete, orthodontics becomes much more difficult and takes longer, and expected changes to the bone from orthodontic intervention can hardly be fully achieved — in some cases the doctor even has to recommend extracting permanent teeth or jaw surgery.
When Should Parents Take Their Child to an Orthodontist Right Away?
Parents should take their child to an orthodontist when they notice any of the following problems:
Gapped teeth, large gaps between teeth.
Teeth growing in disorder, crowded.
Protruding teeth: the upper front teeth and upper lip stick out far forward.
Underbite: the lower front teeth sit in front of the upper front teeth, and the upper teeth are not visible when smiling.
Deep bite: only the upper jaw is visible when the child smiles.
Crossbite: one or more teeth grow in the wrong bite position.
Open bite: the upper and lower jaws are far apart.

Braces Process for Children in the Growth Stage
The stages of orthodontics for children aged 4–14 include:

Step 1
Bone correction stage

Step 2
Tooth replacement monitoring stage

Step 3
Fixed orthodontic stage
Stage 1: Bone correction
Bone correction takes 12–24 months, during which the doctor works with orthodontic appliances to correct jaw irregularities (such as skeletal protrusion and skeletal underbite) in children aged 4–14.
Five special orthodontic appliances are used:
- EF functional orthopedic appliance for children: Used in the pre-orthodontic intervention stage to treat dental and jaw irregularities early. The child wears the EF appliance for at least 2 hours during the day and all night while sleeping.
- HEADGEAR appliance for correcting protruding jaws in children: Corrects the anteroposterior discrepancy between the upper and lower jaws, helping reduce the child's skeletal protrusion. The HEADGEAR appliance is worn at least 8 hours a day.
- Facemask appliance for correcting underbite jaws in children: Used to help correct underbites in children whose upper jaw is underdeveloped in the anteroposterior direction or whose lower jaw overgrows. This appliance must be worn at least 8–12 hours a day in the evening and at night.
- Quad-Helix jaw expansion appliance: Helps adjust the jaw so it develops in balance; used for children from 9 years old.
- Tongue crib for open bite correction: Fixed to the first molars using bands, it prevents the tongue from pushing toward the front teeth, correcting the habit of tongue placement.
Stage 2: Monitoring tooth replacement
After the bone correction stage, the doctor monitors the child's baby tooth replacement and permanent tooth eruption every 3–6 months.
Stage 3: Fixed orthodontics
After tooth replacement is complete, the doctor aligns the teeth evenly and fine-tunes the bite. This stage takes 18–24 months to complete (depending on the specific case).
Duration of children's growth-guidance braces
Usually 1–3 years, which may be shorter or longer depending on the child's dental irregularities.
Braces Methods for Children
Kha Dental Nha Trang currently offers 3 methods of pediatric orthodontics. After the examination, depending on the child's dental condition, the doctor will advise and explain to the parents which type of braces is right for their child.
Growth-guidance orthodontic appliances.
Growth-guidance orthodontic appliances for children aged 4–14 correct skeletal relationship discrepancies and help reposition the jawbone into the correct position with an even, rounded dental arch. After the bone-correction appliance stage stabilizes the jawbone, the child moves on to fine-tune the bite with fixed bracket braces or clear aligners.
Top 3 special orthodontic appliances used in the growth-guidance age range for children aged 4–14:
1. Quad-Helix appliance: Supports jaw expansion for children:
An appliance that helps align teeth by widening the upper dental arch for children from 6 years old with: uneven arch development, narrow jaw, crowding, misalignment, protrusion or underbite.
The child wears this appliance for 4–6 months.
2. Cervical Headgear – Appliance for correcting protruding jaws in children:
Cervical Headgear is an orthodontic appliance designed for children in the growth stage with a Class II bite (also known as skeletal protrusion).
This useful appliance helps re-establish a new occlusal plane, correct molar axis direction, widen the upper jaw and stimulate the lower jaw to grow forward. This improves the condition of a forward-projecting upper jaw and a deeply retracted lower jaw, adjusting and harmonizing the anteroposterior relationship between the lower and upper jaws to reduce protrusion.
This ideal specialized appliance only needs to be worn in the evening while sleeping, 8 hours a day. With its simple design, children using an orthodontic Headgear feel comfortable and not too uncomfortable, so parents can rest assured.
3. Facemask – Appliance for correcting underbite jaws in children:
An extraoral appliance that supports orthopedic correction of underbite cases, bringing strong change to young patients whose upper jaw is underdeveloped in the anteroposterior direction or whose lower jaw overgrows (the lower jaw projects far forward compared with the upper jaw).
This appliance must be worn by the child at least 8–12 hours a day.
Kha Dental Vietnam accompanies parents on the journey of caring for their child's smile. Parents should take children aged 4–6 to see a dentofacial orthopedic specialist (orthodontics/braces) to screen for baby tooth replacement and bite misalignment, because early orthodontics is the foundation for children to have a healthy, beautiful, lasting smile in adulthood.
Fixed bracket braces.
Bracket braces use brackets (metal or ceramic) combined with specialized orthodontic archwires, fixed on the teeth to create a pulling force that moves teeth into the position the doctor wants and corrects bite discrepancies. Treatment takes 1–3 years depending on the degree of the child's dental misalignment.
Bracket braces are the popular traditional orthodontic method for children.
Clear aligners
Clear aligners are an advanced orthodontic method with high aesthetics, easy to remove and clean, and not obstructive. The clear trays are made of special bio-based plastic that meets safety standards during use, designed individually to the child's dental impressions and working by applying force to move teeth according to the doctor's plan.
The clear trays are precisely designed to the child's dental impressions and tooth size, not obstructive and highly aesthetic.
Where Is the Best Place for Children's Braces?
Doctors Specialized in Pediatric Growth-Guidance Orthodontics Who Understand Children's Psychology
Dr. Trinh Ngoc Kha studied and received in-depth training at Ho Chi Minh City University of Medicine and Pharmacy, majoring in Odonto-Stomatology. He did not stop there but continued in-depth research and attended many domestic and international orthodontic training courses, focusing especially on pediatric growth-guidance orthodontics.
Since his student days, Dr. Ngoc Kha witnessed failed orthodontic cases caused by the overuse of extractions, which seriously affected patients' temporomandibular joint and muscle systems — joint pain, jaw fatigue, bone loss, loose teeth and many other dangerous complications. This drove him to keep researching dentofacial orthopedics in depth, especially growth-guidance braces for children, determined to find a non-extraction, minimally invasive solution that restores healthy, satisfying smiles and dispels the fear of having teeth pulled during orthodontic treatment.
Now equipped with deep knowledge of growth-guidance orthodontics for children and adults and an understanding of the biomechanical progression of the skull–mandible system, Dr. Ngoc Kha confidently and successfully treats orthodontic cases using the most modern, up-to-date methods of contemporary orthodontics – braces without removing premolars, dispelling the prejudice that “braces for protruding teeth require extractions” and “braces for crowded teeth require extractions,” avoiding the serious consequences and regret of extractions for orthodontic patients, especially children who fall victim to poor-quality orthodontics based on dogmatic, outdated beliefs. This contributes to creating a healthy, beautiful, lasting smile, preserving the full number of natural teeth on the dental arch while still achieving maximum aesthetics and chewing function. That is the treatment philosophy and goal Dr. Ngoc Kha always pursues and keeps in mind.

THE STORY OF IN-DEPTH BRACES FOR CHILDREN
AT KHA DENTAL NHA TRANG
Little Do Viet Tran is one of the cases brought by his parents to Kha Dental for orthodontics at exactly the right age. Before that he had a skeletal and dental protrusion, a receding chin and crowded teeth, which affected his looks and made him self-conscious, so he did not dare to smile much while playing and studying with friends. Dr. Ngoc Kha designed a treatment plan of a Quad-Helix growth-guidance appliance phase followed by a bracket braces phase, giving him a lovely smile by widening the dental arch, aligning the teeth, and restoring a perfect profile by reducing the protrusion and adjusting the forward projection of the chin. What is special in this case is that the doctor did NOT EXTRACT a single tooth from the child's dental arch, yet still maximized facial aesthetics and successfully reduced the protrusion, dispelling the prejudice that “braces for protruding teeth require extractions” and “braces for crowded teeth require extractions.” Now, thanks to his perseverance in braces treatment with Kha Dental, Viet Tran has successfully reduced his protrusion, has a golden-ratio smile, teeth and bite in the correct physiological and functional position, a completely changed profile that makes his overall face more harmonious and balanced, all while preserving the full number of natural teeth on his dental arch.
“I want to see Dr. Kha every day” – little Viet Tran shared happily
What do parents say about the children's braces service at Kha Dental?
At Kha Dental, the price of children's braces depends on the condition of the misalignment; the doctor will design a treatment plan and recommend the appropriate method.
Ms. Kim Hoa - parent of Do Viet Tran - shares her experience after using the Children's Braces service at Kha Dental.
“I went to many dental clinics and was told that to treat a protruding jaw and give my child a beautiful smile, 4 more premolars had to be extracted. Setting aside from a medical perspective whether this extraction is good or bad for the child, as a loving mother I only wanted to give my child the very best, and I longed to find a doctor who would treat him with the best braces method while still protecting his natural teeth, because I always put his health first. I did not agree to the extraction plan, thinking that losing teeth would weaken my child's teeth as he grew up and that he was still too young; I did not give up and was determined to find a reputable clinic specializing in braces that could meet the wishes of a mother like me. Through an acquaintance's recommendation, I learned about Kha Dental, which has a new braces method that can reduce protrusion without extracting my child's 4 premolars. Dr. Ngoc Kha advised thoroughly on a treatment plan that reduces protrusion while keeping Tran's full number of teeth. The clinic is clean and modern, and the nurses cared for Tran very attentively. I felt completely reassured and was especially delighted to have found a doctor to entrust my child to. Now Tran loves to smile, his protrusion is clearly reduced, he enjoys his meals and his teeth cleaning is much better than before.”

Let Kha Dental Be Your Child's Companion on a Smooth Braces Journey
Parents should not overlook the following important notes so that their child achieves a perfect, lasting result on the braces journey. Before treatment
Choose a reputable dental clinic with experienced orthodontists who indicate a suitable braces method with quality, safe appliances.
Start your child's braces at the “golden” time of ages 4–14 (the tooth replacement stage), to achieve comprehensive orthodontic results in less time, more smoothly and with less discomfort.
Research orthodontic methods thoroughly and consult the doctor to make the right choice for your child's dental irregularities.
Helping your child stay psychologically balanced during braces is very important for a smooth orthodontic journey. Parents and doctors should accompany the child, chat with them and explain the meaning and future results orthodontic treatment will bring.
During & After treatment
Pay attention to your child's nutrition: for the first 1–2 days choose liquid or mashed food (such as porridge, soup, oatmeal, soft-cooked pasta, mashed potatoes, vegetable noodles…) so your child isn't in pain when eating. For desserts, parents can choose: bananas, low-fat milk, yogurt, cheese, smoothies, juices…
Children should avoid hard foods (hard candy, bread, nuts, apples), sticky foods (chewing gum, gummies and jelly candies), and foods that discolor teeth (caramel, tea, soft drinks).
Guide your child to clean their teeth regularly as directed by the doctor. Use a soft-bristled toothbrush to clean tooth surfaces, brushing gently over the braces frame to avoid dislodging brackets. Parents can have children use dental floss to remove leftover plaque and food debris.
Remind your child to correct bad habits such as mouth breathing, tongue thrusting, thumb sucking, nail biting or picking at the appliances with their hands… so they do not affect the orthodontic results.
Take your child for dental visits exactly as scheduled by the doctor to check the speed of tooth movement and promptly correct any abnormalities.
Frequently Asked Questions About Children's Braces
Ages 4–6 are the golden period of a child's jaw, with strong growth and development; any bone intervention at this time is extremely favorable and ideal for achieving the highest level of facial aesthetics, meeting parents' wishes and expectations best in creating a proper bite for the child's teeth in both aesthetics and function. The doctor can easily adjust the jawbone position optimally, and widen and align the bone favorably. Above all, the treatment response of children aged 4–6 is at its highest level, delivering comprehensive change and perfect results in both teeth and jaws with the fastest treatment time and remarkable adaptability at this age. Ages 4–6 are the baby-teeth stage, the beginning of the mixed dentition period, and every change and correction of the bite that the doctor carries out easily creates a favorable foundation, preparing the permanent teeth to achieve an ideal bite in the future. Early orthodontics not only brings high aesthetic effect but also helps reduce the child's risk of surgical intervention in adulthood, because over time skeletal irregularities can progress and worsen, especially in children with an underbite if not detected and treated at the right time. If this condition persists into adulthood, the child needs not only braces but also combined orthognathic surgery to achieve aesthetic results, causing much pain to the child and high costs for the family.
In children entering or finishing puberty at ages 14–16, bone growth slows, the structure and position of the jawbone are almost fully set, and the adult permanent teeth have fully erupted. Orthopedic intervention at this stage gives a slower response and takes longer, but the results do not reach the optimum, cannot create comprehensive changes to teeth and bone, and adaptability is lower than in children with baby teeth or mixed dentition.
There are 2 payment options:
At the clinic: payment by treatment stage, divided into 3 – 4 payments depending on the case and the doctor's treatment plan.
Through a bank: Kha Dental supports customers with 0% interest installments for invoices from 20 million.
An underbite is a condition in which the upper jaw is underdeveloped and the lower jaw overgrows, creating a reverse bite with the lower jaw projecting far forward and covering the upper jaw, making the child's face less aesthetic and the child less confident when communicating and meeting friends. If not treated in time, this condition will worsen over time and, when the child reaches adulthood, there is a risk of needing orthognathic surgery. Therefore, as soon as you notice signs of an underbite as described, parents should take the child to a dental clinic specialized in dentofacial orthopedics to see an orthodontist in person. The child will have X-rays taken and craniofacial measurements checked, a comprehensive treatment plan advised, and an appliance suited to each child's condition indicated. Our doctors are ready to share and accompany the child on the braces journey, helping the child soon regain a proper bite and aesthetics.
For children who unfortunately have syndromes related to developmental delay, hyperactivity or autism, orthodontic treatment is still possible if the child and parents cooperate well with the doctor. At the same time, parents should take the child to hospitals and pediatric specialist clinics for thorough consultation and treatment. In addition, the support and companionship of parents and the coordinated treatment of doctors from different specialties, including psychologists and dentofacial orthopedists, will help create the best development environment for the child in both physical and mental health, including oral health.
Typically during braces treatment, the doctor will schedule orthodontic follow-ups every 4 – 6 weeks. When a child gets braces at Kha Dental, staff will proactively and carefully notify you of the follow-up schedule so parents can easily arrange time to bring their child to see the doctor.
For children's braces to give worthwhile results, this journey requires not only the efforts and cooperation of the child and parents but also an optimal treatment roadmap designed by a doctor with in-depth expertise in pediatric dentofacial orthopedics. With a bank of successful orthodontic cases for children from simple to complex, the team of doctors at Kha Dental is always ready to accompany parents, helping children have a radiant smile and step into life with the key of confidence to reap much success in their future careers.
