What is root canal treatment?
Root canal treatment (endodontics) is a dental procedure that removes the pulp tissue of the tooth (commonly called “removing the nerve”), cleans and shapes the canal, and seals the root canal with special material.
In which cases is root canal treatment needed?
Root canal treatment is indicated by the doctor in the following cases:
Teeth with large decay-related fractures exposing the pulp.
Teeth with exposed pulp during porcelain crown preparation.
Teeth with periapical infection (abscess, cyst, granuloma).
Severe periodontal disease with bone loss reaching the root apex, causing pulp necrosis.
In which cases is root canal treatment contraindicated?
Root canal treatment is indicated to clean the root canals, helping patients keep their natural tooth for restoration (filling or porcelain crown). Therefore, root canal treatment is reconsidered if the tooth cannot be restored after treatment or the failure rate is high. Some contraindications for root canal treatment include:
Vertically fractured teeth.
Severe internal or external root resorption.
Teeth loosened by severe periodontal disease.
Patients who do not cooperate during treatment.
Excessively high cost.
What signs tell you that you need root canal treatment?
If a patient has an infected tooth, that is when root canal treatment is needed to completely remove the infection. In some cases patients have no symptoms, while others have obvious symptoms. So if a patient has any of the following signs, they need to come to Kha Dental to have the condition of the tooth pulp checked. They are:
Persistent tooth pain that does not subside: If a patient feels constant toothache day and night, or intermittently, the tooth is very likely suffering from irreversible pulpitis.
Pain from pressure: If a patient has toothache when chewing, this means the pulp nerve is damaged and the patient needs to be examined urgently.
Swollen gums: If a tooth is infected, the gums may swell a lot and discharge pus.
A pimple on the gum near the tooth: If there is a pus pimple on the gum area, it may be a symptom of a periapical abscess.
Discolored tooth: Teeth with necrotic pulp will, after a while, become darker than teeth with healthy pulp.
Loose tooth: When the tooth infection spreads and causes bone loss, the periodontal tissue supporting the tooth is damaged and the tooth becomes loose.
Root canal treatment procedure?
The root canal treatment process is carried out in the following steps in order:

Step 1
Examination + X-rays to check the condition of the pulp and root apex

Step 2
Anesthesia + cleaning the pulp tissue + preparing the root canals

Step 3
Sealing the root canals + final filling/restoration
Step 1: Examination + X-rays to check the condition of the pulp and root apex
At the first appointment, the doctor examines the mouth and assesses the patient's dental condition. The patient then has X-rays taken to survey the root apex and periapical tissue disease and to make a suitable treatment plan. The doctor also answers all the patient's questions about periapical diseases and the condition of the pulp, reassures the patient, and helps them feel at ease to begin treatment as early as possible.
Step 2: Anesthesia + cleaning the pulp tissue + preparing the root canals
After the patient agrees to the treatment plan, the doctor anesthetizes the tooth to be treated so the patient feels no discomfort while the pulp tissue and any necrotic tissue is removed. The doctor uses special instruments to prepare and shape the root canals and irrigation solutions to completely eliminate bacteria, dentin debris and leftover organic tissue in the canals.
Step 3: Sealing the root canals + final filling/restoration
After the canals are shaped and cleaned and the tooth no longer hurts, the doctor seals the root canals with filling material and sealer cement. Finally, the doctor rebuilds the tooth crown with composite or a porcelain crown to protect the tooth after root canal treatment.
Depending on the complexity of the root canal system and periapical disease, the treatment may take one or several appointments, and each appointment may last from 30 to 90 minutes. If more than one appointment is needed, the doctor will place antiseptic medication in the canal and a temporary filling to keep food from entering the canal.

Creating Healthy, Beautiful and Lasting Smiles

When I came to Kha Dental Nha Trang, I found the facilities very modern, clean and comfortable, creating a warm, homey feeling. The dental nurses were so friendly and cared for me with great enthusiasm. Dr. Ngoc Kha in particular has a gentle, confident voice and decisive technique — placing implants and making porcelain crowns for me without any pain at all; I fell asleep without even noticing! After Dr. Kha gave me a smile makeover, I feel much more confident when I smile, and I can comfortably go to class reunions with my friends now that I'm back in my homeland!

I've had an open bite since I was little, plus a crooked canine sitting way up high, and my teeth were very crowded — I didn't dare to smile at all. Since Dr. Kha started my braces, pulling the canine back into an aesthetic position, my teeth are now evenly aligned and, above all, my open bite is gone. Thank goodness my teeth are healthy and beautiful; I enjoy eating so much more because I can now eat foods I never could before because of the open bite. Even though I'm still in the fine-tuning stage before the braces come off, I already feel far more confident than before, and I can smile brightly in front of a crowd in these precious youthful years — I'm so happy!
